We’re lucky to be surrounded by the beauty of the Derbyshire countryside, and it’s a daily reminder of how important it is to look after our environment for future generations. While we know there’s always more we can do, we’re committed to making positive changes and are continually working to improve.
From making our houses and cottages more energy efficient to introducing comprehensive recycling procedures, we’re taking practical steps to reduce our impact and care for the environment we live in.
Here are some of the things we’ve already put in place:
We’re taking steps to make our properties as energy efficient as possible. Extra insulation and double glazing help to keep the houses warm and reduce wasted energy. We’ve switched to LED lighting throughout and are upgrading appliances to more efficient models as older ones need replacing. Where possible, we’re also moving towards renewable energy sources to further cut our environmental impact.
We’ve put clear recycling systems in place across our properties to help reduce waste and make it easy for guests to do their bit. Each site has separate bins for general waste, mixed recycling, and glass, with clear labels to guide you. We also provide information on what can and can’t be recycled locally, so nothing is wasted.
Behind the scenes, we work with the local council and waste providers to ensure that as much as possible is reused, recycled, or composted rather than sent to landfill. By keeping our recycling process simple and accessible, we hope to encourage everyone staying with us to join in caring for the environment during their visit.
We’re making conscious choices about the products and suppliers we use. Wherever possible, we buy from local businesses to reduce transport miles and support the Derbyshire economy. We also look for eco-friendly and sustainably sourced products — from cleaning supplies to guest amenities — to minimise our environmental footprint.
To cut down on single-use plastics, we’ve moved towards refillable toiletries, reduced plastic packaging in our welcome hampers, and avoid disposable items wherever alternatives exist. While we know there’s more to do, we’re committed to making steady changes that reduce waste and protect the environment for future generations.
Our gardens are an important part of Peak and Dale Places, and we’re managing them in ways that support both our guests’ enjoyment and the local environment. We’ve introduced a cut-flower garden to provide seasonal blooms without the need for imported flowers, and we maintain an onsite compost heap to recycle garden and food waste back into the soil.
We’re moving towards more sustainable planting by adding long-lasting perennials, harvesting and reusing rainwater to keep the gardens healthy, and planting new trees to increase biodiversity and help absorb carbon. Each of these small steps makes our outdoor spaces more resilient and environmentally friendly, while creating a more beautiful setting for everyone to enjoy.
